New Advances in Pediatric Orthopaedics
Young people are generally the healthiest of us all. They bounce back from injuries quicker and avoid them easier altogether with their flexibility and strength.
However, this in no way makes them immune to sports injuries and other conditions that MidAmerica Orthopaedics provides care for. We offer comprehensive care for pediatrics, and this article will detail some of the new advances in this industry in general, as well as what differentiates MidAmerica Orthopaedics in this realm. Parents, be sure to pay attention to these trends and others, in order to make best use of the resources available to you and your child.
What’s Happening in the World of Pediatric Orthopaedics?
First, one of the most important recent trends in pediatric orthopaedic care is the increased use of minimally invasive procedures. Surgeries can be extremely draining mentally and physically on people of all ages – and this is certainly true of children. At MidAmerica Orthopaedics, we are also proud to implement these practices into our care as well.
Additionally, there was a recent study which analyzed the approaches to dealing with torus fractures of the wrist, one of the most common injuries sustained by children. The study took 1000 children aged 4-15, separated them into two groups according to bandage type, and gauged their pain responses. Splint immobilization is the de facto approach, and a soft elastic bandage was the more experimental treatment. After forty-two days, eleven percent of children returned to a splint due to pain. What this shows is that other options for dealing with common fractures can be effective in the short term, but the tried-and-true method of splint immobilization is still best. It is nevertheless helpful to understand and realize what methods of treatment may or may not be outdated.
