To aid in diagnosing medical conditions of the musculoskeletal system, MidAmerica Orthopaedics provides ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, at our Palos Hills location.
This non-operative procedure involves exposing part of the body to high frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the inside of the body. Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation (as used in X-rays).
We look forward to serving you. For more information, please call (708) 237-7200. Our ultrasound patients come to us from New Lenox, Oak Lawn, Worth, Evergreen Park, Burbank, Alsip, Bridgeview, Frankfort, Tinley Park, Orland Park and Homer Glen.
Ultrasound imaging is typically used to diagnose:
Tendon tears
Abnormalities of the muscles
Bleeding or other fluid collections within the muscles, bursae, and joints
Soft tissue masses such as ganglion cyst
Early stages of rheumatoid arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis symptoms)
Electrodiagnostic studies (sometimes called EMG for electromyography) are a commonly used technique to test the function of muscles and nerves.
The diagnosis and initial treatment of nerve problems, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, are based upon taking a thorough history and the performance of a physical examination by your orthopedic doctor.
An EMG is often requested to confirm the physician’s diagnosis, especially in cases where surgical treatment may be recommended. Electrodiagnostic testing is also ordered when the cause of numbness and tingling or muscle weakness is unknown.
The test consists of two parts and is performed in our physician’s office:
measures the speed at which electrical signals are transmitted down your nerve.
measures the electrical activity of specific muscles in your upper extremity.
The results of the examination are recorded on a special computer screen to ensure accuracy and completeness of the information received.
A nerve test typically requires 30-45 minutes to perform and you may experience minor aches during the test, but there are no activity restrictions once the examination is completed.
Test results will be discussed at your next clinic visit for further treatment recommendations.
To schedule an appointment for an EMG, please call (708)-237-7200. Our EMG patients come to us from Orland Park, Homer Glen, New Lenox, Oak Lawn, Worth, Evergren Park, Burbank, Alsip, Bridgeview, Frankfort and Tinley Park.
Osteoporosis screening is done using a bone density test called a DexaScan which measures bone mineral density. The DexaScan is a noninvasive test which takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
The DexaScan will determine if an individual demonstrates thinning of the bones (osteopenia) or osteoporosis and your risk of developing fractures. The difference between osteopenia and osteoporosis is based upon the degree of loss of bone mineral density. Test results are available the next day.
DexaScan Screening
Provides Initial Diagnosis
Follows the response to treatment
Repeated at 2 year Intervals
Women start at age 65 - earlier screening indicated with risk factors(Example: Fracture before age 50)
Men start at age 70 - earlier screening indicated with risk factors
MidAmerica Orthopaedics Osteoporosis screening program is under the direction of Beverlee Brisbin, MD, FAAFP.

Our new MRI delivers outstanding patient comfort beginning with the oval bore - the widest of any 1.5T on the market.
Palos MRI has an ultra-wide 74cm opening, and the short overall length promotes a level of patient comfort with no compromise of field of view or image quality.
A positive patient experience is enhanced by adjustable airflow, lighting and two-way communication. Ultra-wide 74cm oval bore accommodates the extra-wide 63cm patient-friendly table.
It Begins with Patient Comfort
500 pound weight capacity
Lowers to 20 inches allowing easy access for wheelchair, elderly and mobility-challenged patients
Retractable arm boards on either side provide additional comfort and security for the patient and a workspace for injecting contrast
Arm boards also extend fully upright to serve as side rails during patient transportation
Greater than 9 feet of table travel allows the scan to be performed feet first leading to low anxiety orientation
The spacious room with multiple windows and the sky view LED ceiling improves patient comfort and reduces anxiety and claustrophobia
The MRI scan time is significantly reduced, most of the scans take less than 25 minutes
Your physician has scheduled you for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan at Palos MRI. We encourage you to read the following material as this will help explain the MRI process and answer many of your questions.

Your MRI scan images and report will be reviewed by you and your physician at your next clinic visit. Our goal is to provide you with a pleasant experience and ensure the highest quality of orthopaedic care.
Our MRI patients come to us from Tinley Park, Orland Park, Homer Glen, New Lenox, Oak Lawn, Worth, Evergreen Park, Burbank, Alsip, Bridgeview and Frankfort.
MRI images require the use of non-harmful magnetic fields. Magnetic imaging requires that certain precautions are taken to ensure patient safety.
A pre-screening process is required to make certain that there are no contraindications to performing your MRI.
FAQ: Do MRI's require contrast?
Most MRIs do not require the use of contrast material. The need for contrast is usually determined after your MRI is read by our Musculoskeletal Radiologists if your initial scan requires more information to accurately diagnose your condition.
The material used is gadolinium which is an approved substance by the United States Food and Drug Administration which will highlight certain aspects of your MRI scan.
Pre-screening Process
The pre-screening process is usually done over the telephone. A representative from Palos MRI will call you and take you through the pre-screening process.
This requires a brief questionnaire about your health history. For example this may include questions pertaining to implantable devices such as a pacemaker, recent surgery, pregnancy, or if you are a metal worker.
You can also choose to download and complete our MRI pre-screening form. Completion of this form prior to your examination may help expedite your visit to our facility.
Depending upon your age and medical history, laboratory blood testing may be required prior to your scan.
We look forward to providing for your health care needs. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at (708) 237-7227.
An X-Ray is a photographic or digital image of the internal composition of the body.
Why do I need an X-Ray?
Assists physicians to diagnose your condition
Used to institute an appropriate treatment plan
Provide follow-up information to our physicians about your response to therapy
When are X-Rays taken?
Initially, X-rays are taken on your first visit. Any additional X-Ray imaging, when recommended by your attending physician, are taken to provide follow-up information about your response to therapy, such as fracture healing; whether they are treated non-operatively or surgically.
Our X-Ray Technologist
Our experienced x-ray technologist will assist you during your radiology series, giving you instructions on positioning, answering your questions and providing you with a comfortable and respectful environment. Should you have any additional questions during the procedure, please feel free to ask your radiology technologist.
Additional Diagnostics
If there is any question, then advanced diagnostic imaging techniques may subsequently be ordered by your orthopedic doctor. These techniques include the following:
