When dealing with an injury to the spine or brain, it is wise to see a specialist who understands the intricacies of the body's complex neurological system. MidAmerica Orthopaedics is pleased to have Kevin M. Jackson, a Board Certified Neurological Surgeon on its staff to meet this need.
Dr. Jackson specializes in both minimally invasive spinal surgery as well as aggressive spinal tumor resection and reconstruction with instrumentation. He is also skilled in cranial surgery and Chiari malformations, a condition where brain tissue extends to the spinal canal.
Among the many conditions which Dr. Jackson and the other physicians at MidAmerica Orthopaedics address are concussions. Unlike most injuries, there is often no visible sign of injury with a concussion, but it is a serious injury that can lead to lasting brain damage or death.
Basically, a concussion is a metabolic dysfunction of the brain that is triggered by a physical event — serious impact to the head or upper body that causes the brain to strike the hard skull. In most cases there is no damage to the brain detected on X-rays. But an additional impact can cause a more serious injury to the brain, which can result in permanent brain damage if not addressed.
